Vietnam to appoint Hong as the first female central bank governor

The government is seeking approval from lawmakers to appoint Deputy Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam Nguyen Thi Hong to the leading position of the agency.
 

Hong is expected to be the first female Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam.

Hong is expected to replace State Bank of Vietnam Governor Le Minh Hung, who will be appointed to hold the position as chief of the Party Central Office, according to information from a meeting of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly in Hanoi.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc is scheduled to seek the National Assembly’s approval for the dismissal of Minister of Science and Technology Chu Ngoc Anh and State Bank of Vietnam Governor Le Minh Hung on November 11.

A day afterward, the Vietnamese premier will seek legislators’ approval for the appointment of some government members.

Hong was born in 1968' She has a master degree in economics and high-level political theory. She has nearly 30 years working at the State Bank of Vietnam.

She began working in the agency from January 1991 as an expert at the Foreign Exchange Management Department. In November 1993, she moved to the Monetary Policy Department.

From 1993-2014, at the Monetary Policy Department, she held the positions as expert, Deputy Head of Department, Head of Department of Monetary Policy, Deputy Director.

In August 2014, Hong was appointed to the position as Deputy Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam. On August 16, 2019, she was reappointed to this position.

In 2019, she was honored by Forbes Vietnam as one of the 50 most influential women in Vietnam.
